Building Better Readers: Stress-Free Strategies for the Savvy SLP (Robertson)

The recent emphasis on the development of literacy has created a set of new challenges for speech-language pathologists who work with pre-school and school-aged children.  Given that language problems are both a cause and a consequence of reading problems, SLPs, with the support of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, are increasingly taking the lead in designing and providing intervention programs that support development in both domains.  This workshop will explore the reciprocal relationships between language and literacy and link them to the skills identified as critical to the development of reading by the National Literacy panel.  Participants will be provided with evidence-based intervention strategies and useful resources to facilitate oral and written language skills across a variety of age and skill levels.

Following this presentation, clinicians will be able to:

  • Summarize key elements of the current knowledge base related to language, literacy, and cognition (learning.)
  • Incorporate interactive reading strategies into intervention for reluctant readers and children with communicative disorders.
  • Link language intervention to classroom activities related to literacy development.
  • Provide evidence based intervention to support oral and written language, cognition, and pragmatics for children with various communicative disorders
