A Solution-Focused Approach to Counseling and Treatment (Tellis, C)

A solution-focused approach to counseling and treatment in speech-language pathology and audiology shifts the emphasis from the disorder being treated to the goals the client wants to achieve through therapy. This workshop will detail The Solution Cycle, a practical, four-step, nonlinear, leadership model of an inclusive interviewing and counseling process. Participants will explore real-world applications of this approach to use in the therapy process, including the 5 Intentions of Communication, the Circle of Power, and the Counseling-Integration Matrix.

Listening to persuade the client: Transmitting the 5 Intentions of Communication (Barone)

This is an interactive program assisting clinicians as they engage in therapy and counseling. Clinicians learn to interact effectively with clients in critical conversations by listening responsively for the variety of intentions clients exhibit when they communicate, and using these same intentions to transmit successfully and efficiently.

Motivating the hard to reach client: The Counseling-Integration Matrix (Barone)

SLPs work with clients who are not always receptive to the work required by therapy. The C-I matrix allows the clinician to assess client motivation by gauging the effect of a disorder on the client’s quality of life and coupling that effect with the client’s willingness to change. The matrix examines 4 possible quadrants occupied by the client and helps the SLP achieve progress in each of the quadrants. The strategies detailed in this workshop have applications with younger and more mature clients and with clients of varying cognitive capabilities.

Practical Counseling Strategies for Speech-Language Pathologists (Yaruss)

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are trained to help people with speech and language disorders improve their communication abilities and increase their ability to function in their daily lives. Many times, however, people with communication disorders also experience negative affective and cognitive reactions to their speaking difficulties. These reactions can have a significant impact on a speaker’s emotional well-being and impede a client’s progress in therapy. If SLPs wish to help their clients achieve their greatest success in therapy, they need to address these negative reactions. Unfortunately, many clinicians do not feel adequately prepared to address emotional or cognitive factors, even though treatment of such reactions are within the SLP’s scope of practice. This workshop provides clinicians with information about counseling people with communication disorders. Topics include: when to use counseling skills, the nature of the emotional reactions clients may experience, and how to develop counseling skills.

The workshop is based on a standard model of the helping process drawn from counseling psychology (Egan's Skilled Helper Model) which helps clients: (a) understand and describe their current situation, (b) identify and select possible options for the successful outcome of treatment, (c) evaluate various strategies for achieving treatment goals, and (d) develop and execute an action plan for achieving goals in treatment and in life in general. Participants will learn several specific counseling strategies that can help them accurately understand the client’s point of view and convey their understanding of the client’s perspective, provide helpful responses to clients’ statements of emotion, and support clients in taking responsibility for change in treatment.
